The time has come for a new benchmark for big-screen villainy. Director David Yates ( Phoenix, Half-Blood) leans on this moment as though the film is making some piercing social comment about the evils of intolerance, but it's just another bargain-basement allegorical reference to racism and - you guessed it - Nazis.

As Voldemort presides over his boardroom of Gothic bad guys, which includes another wince-worthy turn by Helena Bohnam Carter as the maniacal Bellatrix Lestrange - he punches the point about how Muggles (i.e. And it's not as though the motivating themes in the film are particularly deep or revelatory or even fresh enough to justify the prolonged and dogged down-shifting of pace. Unfortunately, that's a richly stylistic flourish lacking from the rest of the film. That said, there is one sequence of absolute beauty in Deathly Hallows when the fable behind the film's title is illustrated by graceful, stick-like figures in sepia. Visually, the film is shot with the solemnity of a funeral march as huge sets and low-key lighting keep the mood so sullen and morbid that one becomes grateful for any burst of movement or effects, however fleeting it turns out to be.

There are a few precious moments of humour in Deathly Hallows that play on the low-level conflicts and high-end affections between the three leads - in one lovely, surprisingly human moment Harry and Hermoine improvise a dance - but they feel slam-injected into the movie to keep it from completely blanding out. The pervasive dark tone, the heavy-handed dialogue and the sloth-like pace of Deathly Hallows reflects the self-importance that has now overwhelmed the obligation to entertain. What the film is big on, however, is grimness, and it's a grimness symptomatic of what the franchise has become.

It's like a gunfight from a TV cop show, but with lightning balls instead of bullets. There's a brief spurt of aerial combat, a quick scene where Harry grapples with a giant snake and a few moments where the kids engage in a few exchanges of wand pointing with some bad guys in a coffee shop. There wouldn't be five minutes worth of genuine spectacle here, and what there is fairly unexceptional, off-the-shelf whizz bangery. As with Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is very light on action. Just try and keep count of the infuriating number of wide shots featuring a damned tent. And what a dire, bum-numbing slog of a journey it is, much of which involves the trio heading off on a camping trip. These are powerful pendants that will endow Voldemort with immortality.

As the anti-Harry forces gather in preparation for the climactic smackdown, Harry and his best pals Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) go on a quest to locate and destroy a scattered series of "Horcruxes". As we crawl ever-closer towards the final confrontation between adolescent magician Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and his evil, noseless nemesis Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) we find ourselves, once again, lumbered with the onerous task of having to endure yet another plodding, poorly plotted, immensely overlong adventure.
